Argumentative Essay - Junk Food 1#

Should the sale of junk food in school canteens be banned?

In the era of globalization, advance technologies in food industries have also claw their way up into the food market by making fast foods, also known as junk foods. Junk food has been an issue among dietitians quite often these days. Nonetheless, most of them agree that all food including junk food; can form part of a healthy diet if eaten in moderation. According to Smith (2005), junk food is a term which is commonly used to describe any food that is perceived to be unhealthy and of low nutritional value. Statistically shown, more than 50 percent of children are taking more than recommended intake on fats and sugar contents in foods. Therefore, I totally agree that the sale of junk food in school canteens should be banned.

First and foremost, intake of junk food may lead to excessive weight gain and other health-related problems. Junk food include take away food, pre-packaged meals, and sugary snack foods, mostly raise the kilo joule intake and lead to weight gain. In addition, it worsens as physical activity is not in the mindset of young generation these days. Central University researcher Professor Steven Reynolds says that by offering foods high in fat and sugar, school canteens are actually contributing to the problem of youth weight gain. (Weekend News 2005) A research made by Health Foundation in 2005, highlights that low nutritional value of snack foods are most popular compared to high and moderate nutritional value. This shows that children are not well-nourished because of junk food.

Secondly, litter problems are common incident occurring when there are sales of junk food in that particular area. In this case it is in the school compound. Due to the packaging, fast foods are likely to be the main cause of litter problems. Litter is a safety and health hazard, increases cleaning costs, and is a bad image of our communities. (Family Journal 2005) Eventually, schools that have reduced the sale of junk foods in their canteens have actually reduced their litter problems. Indeed, according to Green (2005), the school groundsman does not have to spend so long cleaning the grounds and has more time to spend on maintenance projects that benefit the school. Therefore, junk foods also contribute towards pollution.

Next, junk foods are actually cause behavioural problems. As most junk foods contain chemical additives, they actually cause behavioural problems in children such as hyperactivity and poor concentration. This is well supported by Caputo (2005) as and added, “Research shows that reducing unhealthy foods in children’s diets can improve their behaviour”. Another statement from Green (2005) says that teachers noticed a marked improvement in student’s behaviour in class and they became calmer after lunch. Thus, this proves that junk foods are the cause bad attitude among children.

All in all, junk foods are likely to cause children to gain weight and be disease-prone if they consume too much of them. Moreover, not only that they will be having a bad attitude-change but also will contributes to litter problems to the public. Schools should also contemplate a way to educate these children to know more about the consequences of over consuming junk foods. So, I sincerely hope that every school in the country will not belittle this issue and take immediate action to combat the existing problem before it is becoming a habit among our future leaders.

Overdraft spending???

I realize something shortly after waking up...*yawn...I loitered beside my bed for a second

What did i spent so much on???
I didn't smoke...i didn't went out much...
In fact this year...i've never been anywhere on weekends other than in A3-02, and palma maju...LOL
I've yet to have any girlfriend to spent on...(gifts, etc.)
Most of the money goes into my stomach...but what the hell with FOOD for RM2000???!!!!
Owh...i forgot that i bought new lens for my spectacles...RM350
And and...another RM320 for a 320GB external hard disk...
Okay...so i spent only RM 1300++ for 3 and a 1/2 months...fewh....
That's about RM340++.... for spending per month...mostly on daily meal and study...
I hope I can survive...^^

meaningful lyrics...

HOLD MY HAND

by Maher Zain

I hear the flower’s kinda crying loud
The breeze’s sound in sad
Oh no
Tell me when did we become,
So cold and empty inside
Lost a way long time ago
Did we really turn out blind
We don’t see that we keep hurting each other no
All we do is just fight

Now we share the same bright sun,

The same round moon
Why don’t we share the same love
Tell me why not
Life is shorter than most have thought

Hold my hand
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand
Turn around and see what we have left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit of me and you
For another chance
And let’s pray for a beautiful world
A beautiful world I share with you

Children seem like they’ve lost their smile
On the new blooded playgrounds
Oh no
How could we ignore , heartbreaking crying sounds
And we’re still going on
Like nobody really cares
And we just stopped feeling all the pain because
Like it’s a daily basic affair

Now we share the same bright sun,
The same round moon
Why don’t we share the same love
Tell me why not
Life is shorter than most have thought

Hold my hand
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand
Turn around and see what we have left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit of me and you
For another chance
And let’s pray for a beautiful world
A beautiful world I share with you

No matter how far I might be
I’m always gonne be your neighbor
There’s only one small planet where to be
So I’m always gonna be your neighbor
We cannot hide, we can’t deny
That we’re always gonna be neighbors
You’re neighbor, my neighbor
We’re neighbors

So hold my hand
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand
Turn around and see what have left behind

Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit of me and you
For another chance
And let’s pray for a beautiful world
A beautiful world I share with you

What are the potential effects of global warming in terms of climate change and how can they be arrested?

Global warming is the observed and projected increases in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Professor Bob Carter of James Cook University, Queensland in his interview in Nzone Tonight said that some places are warming and some places are cooling. Unfortunately, our planet Earth has been increasing its temperature infinitely. The average surface temperature of the Earth rose 0.6 to 0.9 degrees Celsius between 1906 and 2006, and the rate of temperature increases nearly doubled in the last 50 years. (Riebeek 2007) This shows that global warming is occurring at a rising rate and we are the cause of it. As we slowly let global warming becomes uncontrolled, some studies show the potential occurrences to our beloved Earth.

One inevitable consequence of global warming is sea-level rise. The problem is serious because as much as 10 percent of the world’s population lives in coastal areas less than 10 meters (about 30 feet) above sea level. (Riebeek 2007) If this is probably to happen, these communities will become increasingly vulnerable to storm damage and flooding. This will agitate them as they do not have resources to repel changes in climate. Water expands as it warms so, as the oceans are heated, the water they contain takes up more volume, and this makes the sea level rises. The seas also rise when glaciers and ice sheets melt, feeding more water into the oceans. (Woodford 2006) In the movie of “An Inconvenient Truth” (2007), it is mentioned that the maps of the world also would have to be redrawn as a result of this.

In the movie of “An Inconvenient Truth” (2007), the movie mentions that global warming paradoxically causes not only more flooding but also more droughts. This is because global warming does not only increase precipitation worldwide but it also relocates the precipitation. Global warming will result in more hot days and fewer cool days, with the greatest warming happening over land. Longer, more intense heat waves will become more frequent. (Riebeek 2007) The warming will enhance coastal erosion, extend the growing season, and melt the ice caps and glaciers. Now, not only mosquitoes are able to climb higher altitudes, but also vectors of infectious diseases are spreading. There could be more diseases emerging in the near future. Consequently, species those are unable to adapt the sudden climate change are likely to extinct. The ultimate consequence of this is hurricanes will increase in intensity due to warmer ocean surface temperatures.

According to the movie of “An Inconvenient Truth” (2007), we are the ones who can ascend and decrease global warming. To reduce the impact of climate change, we need to reduce global warming. (Woodford 2006) Indeed, this can be done by producing fewer carbon dioxide emissions and by means using less energy or using it more efficiently. We can use electric-efficient appliances by replacing incandescent lamps in our homes with energy-saving fluorescent lamps. We should also buy a hybrid car or higher mileage cars. Use bicycle or walk whenever possible, rather than driving a car. Other than that, we should plant more trees and recycle useable items. Lastly, we should also join international efforts to stop global warming.

In conclusion, global warming is causing havoc to human and the environment. We can consider the “climate change sceptics” that they say it is an environmental phenomenon. Nonetheless, we also play a big role in handling this contentious issue. We are to be blamed for our mistakes when the whole world is facing the consequences in the future if we do not take immediate actions from now. Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, we have to thrive in the responsibility to make the Earth a better place to live for the sake of our children that will too, live in this world.

Australia Bulletin FM - Episode 5

Stop exploitation of doctors from overseas

From : The Australian, April 3, 2010.

by Sue Douglas

WHEN most Australians think of doctors they think of a powerful and privileged group who make three to four times as much as the average bloke. It's not a group that engenders sympathy, or one you associate with exploitation.

The reality is, however, that international medical graduates are a vulnerable group that have been exploited by the government, abused by their own profession and ignored by the public.

Unlike doctors born in Australia, foreign-born doctors are restricted to where they can work, even if they attended medical school and did all their specialty training in Australia. Under section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act, all IMGs, regardless of country of training and citizenship, must work in a designated area of workforce shortage for 10 years. This is a significant chunk of a doctor's professional career.

Also, in Australia your ability to work is determined by your immigration status. You may no longer be able to work as a doctor if you decide to become a permanent resident or citizen. It's much easier to exploit the rights of temporary than permanent residents. If you complain it's easy to have your visa revoked.

In Australia your potential competitors judge your professional qualifications. Imagine going for a job interview where the interviewer was another applicant. Also imagine if that applicant was responsible for drafting the selection criteria upon which you were to be judged. In these circumstances it's next to impossible to have a fair and objective assessment of your qualifications.

In Australia if your rights are abused by one of the medical organisations you have no meaningful recourse to justice. Most are private member-based organisations and therefore exempt from statutory regulation. Imagine having no access to unions, ombudsmen or the judicial system. What recourse would you have in the face of injustice?

This is the reality for the thousands of IMGs who provide an invaluable service to this country. These problems don't just affect IMGs, they have a significant impact on Australia's medical workforce.

Legislation and the accreditation-registration system hinder the deployment of skilled IMGs. The glut of students coming through is not going to fix the problem in the present system because historically the vast majority of Australian doctors are not willing to work in rural areas.

The argument has been made that Section 19AB is necessary to ensure adequate medical services in rural and remote regions. Yes, Australia needs more doctors but does this justify the exploitation of a politically vulnerable group?

So what's the solution? Many countries have a compulsory period of medical service for their new doctors in underserviced areas and-or for disadvantaged populations. We could devise a system in Australia where all new doctors -- regardless of nationality or country of training -- need to work for a specified period of time in a rural community.

Similarly, all IMGs coming into the country would need to provide the same service. In this way the workload is shared more equitably and across a much larger population.

Section 19AB is an affront to human rights and the government must review this discriminatory piece of legislation.

Let's finally take action to ensure that the thousands of IMGs who provide an essential service to this country are finally given a fair go.

Critique : This article talks about new doctors - medical graduates - are being exploited by some countries including Australia themselves. It has been said that new doctors are to work in a designated area of workforce even after they finish their medical studies. However, having as many doctors in the country, it is said that they are not providing the services to the rural areas. I understand the meaning that rural areas are filled in by maybe not the most wealthiest of people, but the Australian government should contemplate something so that the citizens in Australia is treated equally. Well, they have the suggested solution mentioned above, and i hope that the Australian government will consider.
